a reflection on the city and its desires, loneliness, advertising, human labor, this project is based on the ‘massage-spa’ cards, one of the only objects found on the surveilled streets of abu dhabi. the accumulation of words, colours and symbols found on these cards is extended and played with to create a walk-in, deconstructed card, that symbolises a gateway to the hidden underbelly of the city.
Danutė Vaitekūnaitė (b. 1998, Šiauliai, Lithuania) is an artist and educator whose work seeks to reveal invisible systems that exploit human vulnerability. Her practice combines installation, painting, sculpture, writing, design, video, and performance. Revealing the mundane and the overlooked, she focuses on relationships between objects, human and non-human.
Vaitekūnaitė graduated from New York University Abu Dhabi and La Haute École des Arts du Rhin in Strasbourg. Her work has been exhibited in France, Italy, Lithuania, and the UAE, including Jameel Arts Center, 421 Arts Campus, NYUAD Art Gallery, La Chaufferie, Syndicat Potentiel, Šiauliai Art Gallery and Pragiedruliai. Danutė currently works as educational programming coordinator at Šiauliai Art Gallery.
